Can I apply for disability at age 62?

Can I apply for disability at age 62?

If you are disabled, you can file any time up to six months prior to your full retirement age. So, yes, you certainly can file for disability at the age of 62. This is true even if you already filed for retirement but become disabled after filing for retirement.

If you have not filed for retirement but become disabled, you may want to consider filing for retirement and SSDI simultaneously. This would give you income while you wait on your disability decision. If you are approved for disability at a later date, your retirement will be converted to disability and your benefit amount will increase. There is no reason to worry if you do not get approved for disability, you will continue to receive your retirement benefits.

Disability applicants of retirement age have a great advantage over their younger counterparts with their ability to file for both benefits simultaneously. So many will have more financial hardship while they wait for their disability decisions. This is especially true since most disability applicants will have their best chance of approval at a disability hearing.
