Does my retirement affect my SSD?
Many find the requirements of SSD and SSI confusing when income such as a retirement benefit is involved. These two programs could not be more different in that SSI is based on need and SSD is based upon a person's work prior to becoming disabled.
If you are receiving SSD, you are receiving disability benefits that you are entitled to receive because you worked enough to be insured for the program. As such, retirement or pension income have no affect on the amount you get, or your eligibility for disability benefits. The only income that could affect your eligibility to SSDI benefits would be actual work earnings.
On the other hand, retirement or pension benefits would definitely affect your eligibility for SSI disability benefits. This is simply because the SSI disability program is based on need and like all other need based programs, there are income and resource limits.
