Can I get SSI if my wife works?

Can I get SSI if my wife works?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a need based disability program, and like many other social programs it requires that beneficiaries meet income and resource limits. If you are thinking of filing for SSI, your spouse's income limit is affected by household composition. If there are dependent children in the household, the monthly limit will be more than if there are no children. The best way to know if your spouse's income would preclude eligibility is to schedule an interview to speak with a Social Security claims representative.

If you are eligible and approved for disability, you will have reviews that involve an evaluation of your spouse's earnings. Social Security will base your SSI payment amount on how much other income you have, and if other income (i.e. spouse's income) goes up your SSI payment will usually go down.

If the only income in the household is your SSI, Social Security will not count the first $85.00 of your spouse's monthly earnings. However, every dollar over that will cause a 50 percent reduction in your SSI monthly benefit. Each month's earnings must be reported and your SSI benefits are adjusted accordingly.

As I stated earlier, it is a monthly evaluation and it is very important to keep wage reporting current to avoid costly overpayments. Wages can be reported by visiting, calling, or writing your local Social Security Office. Or, you can use the automated toll-free SSI telephone wage reporting, the free SSI mobile wage reporting app, or the Social Security online wage reporting tool.
