Can I receive temporary SSI disability benefits?

Can I receive temporary SSI disability benefits?

The simple answer to this question is, no, you cannot receive temporary SSI disabilty benefits. Social Security Disability programs are not temporary disability or percentage disability programs. In fact, the Social Security definition of disability is that you must have been disabled for twelve months, expect to be disabled for twelve months, or that you have a terminal condition.

Unfortunately, SSI or SSDI disability benefits are not emergency cash benefits. You will not be able to receive disability benefits until you are medically approved for disability. Medical disability determinations generally take a few months and there is no guarantee you will be approved for disability.

If your initial disability claim is denied, you may have to use the appeal process which can take more than a year if your claim has to wait for a hearing before an administrative law judge.

If you are not expecting your disabling condition to last long, or you feel you will be back to work within twelve months, there may be no need to file for SSDI or SSI disability. Although, there is an argument for filing for disability just in case you do not get back to work as planned. If it works out that you are able to get to work, you can notify Social Security and they will recall your disability claim. However, if things do not go as planned, you have your disability claim in the system.

2. Can you get Disability or SSI for a short time, i.e. Temporary Disability?
