If you are waiting on an SSDI decision, can you file for SSI?

Subject: Waiting on Social Security Disability

Question: If you are waiting on an SSDI decision, can you file for SSI?

An individual asked the following question for a friend who was applying for disability: "If you are waiting on a decision from Social Security Disability, would applying for SSI mess up your back pay or getting you Social Security Disability?

Answer: I am sure when your friend applied, they evaluated them for whatever benefits they might be eligible for. Disability claims can be filed as SSI only, SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) only, or as concurrent SSDI and SSI claims. Whatever form the claim takes, it will be evaluated as a single claim.

So, if the claim was taken by Social Security as SSDI only, that would mean there is likely no SSI eligibility. But even if the claim had been filed as concurrent, meaning for both Social Security Disability and SSI simultaneously, there would not be separate decisions made. Just one decision for the concurrent claim.
