How much back pay will I get for SSI?

How much back pay will I get for SSI?

There is no standard back payment amount for SSI recipients. The date you filed your SSI claim is the single most important factor in determining your SSI disability back payment. This is a need based disability program and as such there are not retroactive disability benefits payable. This means you can only be back paid to the month after the month you file your disability claim.

There are other things that affect the amount of back pay you might receive. Once an approval has been received, your local Social Security office will contact you to complete their end line review. This review is used to establish that you still meet the income and resource limits of the program among other things. If you still meet the programs limits, you will still have to provide information about your living arrangement.

You may be thinking what does that have to do with my SSI back pay? Many people assume they will automatically receive the maximum allowable SSI monthly disability benefit. This may not be the case. If you are living in the household but you are not paying your fair share of the bills, or you are receiving financial help from family or friends, or you worked or are working you may receive a reduced monthly SSI benefit. Any month your SSI disability benefit was less than the maximum cause you to receive less back pay.

An important thing to remember is that every disability claim does not result in a large back payment of disability benefits. In fact, some SSI beneficiaries receive no back payment.
