And, sadly, it's been a longstanding reality that individuals do die while waiting for their disability claims to be approved, either on the application or on a subsequent appeal. The mere fact that people die while waiting for an appeal to be decided is substantial evidence of how inefficient the system really is. If a person's impairment, or combination of impairments was severe enough to play a part in their demise, it should also have been enough to demonstrate to a disability examiner that the condition or conditions likewise satisfied the Social Security Administration of disability. That definition actually does include language stating that, to be approved for disability, a condition must be severe enough to potentially result in death. According to a recent article in Realclear Politics, "In 2017 alone, more than 10,000 people died waiting to hear if they would be awarded insurance benefits that they had worked for years to earn a 15 percent increase over the previous year."
