Supplemental Security Income in Missouri

Supplemental Security Income is a disability program which is administered by the Social Security Administration. SSI is also a need-based program.

What is a needs-based disability program? A need-based program is a disability program that considers your income and resources when establishing entitlement. Supplemental Security Income disability applicants must be found disabled by the state disability agency (which, depending on your state of residence, may be known as the division of disability determination, the bureau of disability determination, or disability determination services) that makes medical determinations for the social security administration.

After the state disability agency in Missouri renders a medical decision (this is done by a disability examiner who reads and evaluates a claimant's medical records), the disability claim is sent back to the Social Security office to evaluate income and resources.

What types of resource and income does Social Security evaluate for Supplemental Security Income entitlement? Social Security considers wages, unemployment, short and long term disability, land, bank accounts, vehicles, and any other income or resources when making a Supplemental Security Income entitlement determination.

If an individual is found to meet both the medical disability criteria (as we said, this aspect is handled by a disability examiner at the state agency) and non-medical disability criteria for Supplemental Security Income, they will receive a monthly disability benefit.
