Can I be approved for disability benefits without meeting the asthma listing criteria?
Even if you are unable to meet or equal the listing for Asthma, you may still be approved for disability benefits due to your asthma. Social Security disability is based on residual functional capability rather than specific conditions. If your asthma causes you to have significant restriction of daily activities including your ability to work, you may be approved for disability.
Social Security will evaluate the possibility of a medical vocational allowance if you are unable to meet the listing requirements. Medical vocational disability allowances consider an individual's age, education, job skills, job skill transferability, and residual functional capacity (what you are able to do in spite of your asthma) to determine if you are able to do any of the work you have performed in the past 15 years, or if you are able to do any other kind of work considering the medical vocational considerations.
If you are unable to any of your past work or any other work because of the effects of your asthma, you may be approved for disability.
