WHEN DO YOU GET A LETTER ABOUT YOUR DISABILITY BENEFIT AMOUNT?

When are you informed how much you will get for disability after being approved?

A person wrote that they had been approved at a disability hearing several weeks ago and were wondering when they would get a letter advising them of their benefits.

I wrote back the following:

It usually happens in this sequence. A person receive a notice of award that tells them what they will be getting. However, this can take a while after a hearing. Sometimes, a judge will indicate at the hearing that they will approve the case.

Even when that happens, a person must still wait on the formal notification. This can be a slow wait, however, because the decision letters are written by "decision writers" at the hearings office, not by the actual judges hearing the cases.

The fact that there are backlogs in the system can also be a factor. If you had an attorney or non-attorney representative, you can ask that individual to followup on the case. But, unfortunately, there is no reliable way to predict. I would say that most individuals have not gotten a notice at the three week mark.
