Does Social Security send you to a MRI or CT scan?

Will Social Security Disability do an MRI?

There are situations in which you may be sent for testing or additional testing when you apply for Social Security Disability.

Most often, you may be sent for testing if 1) you have no medical treatment or 2) your medical treatment is at some point in the past. Social Security must have current medical information to make their disability determinations, and current for Social Security would be any treatment within the last 90 days.

However, it may be that SSA has current medical treatment for your disabling condition, but the disability examiner determines that they need a clearer picture of what is going on with your condition and the limitations it may cause.

If your disability case involves any of the above situations, the disability examiner may schedule you for a consultative examination with testing, or they may just send you for the testing. Due to the cost of MRI imaging, Social Security rarely sends disability applicants for them.

Disability examiner routinely send disability applicants for x-rays and less often to CT scans to help them discern the severity of their disabling impairments. Social Security will send you for CT scan or X ray at no cost to you; in fact any testing needed for your disability claim will be free to you.
