Will I lose my SSDI benefits?

Will I lose my Social Security Disability or SSI at some point?

Here is a question from a visitor to the site:

Topic: Will I lose my SSDI after a certain number of years?

Question: "I'm 62 and receiving SSDI. Will I lose my SSDI after 7 years?"

Your SSDI will automatically convert to a full retirement benefit at your full retirement age. The only way to lose SSDI is to medically improve to the point of no longer being disabled. Or going back to work at a substantial earnings level.

I am guessing but perhaps you are questioning a seven year disability diary date that was set up for your case after you were approved and awarded benefits. All disability cases receive a diary date for Social Security to review their claims to make sure they still meet the criteria for disability. Disability claims are usually diaried for 3 or 7 years, with 7 years being considered a permanent disability condition.

You shouldn't overly worry about a disability claim being reviewed since most claims are not discontinued. This is because medical improvement is very difficult for SSA to prove. Since you didn't indicate when or what age you started receiving your SSDI benefits, it is not possible to speculate when your case might potentially be coming up for review.

However, based on your age alone, it is exceeding likely that you will simply convert to retirement status. In other words, this shouldn't be a concern for you.
