How many work quarters do you need to qualify for disability ?The number of work quarters or credits needed to qualify for disability will depend on a person's age at the time they become disabled. For example, younger individuals will require fewer work credits to qualify for social security disability. However, an individual must have at least six work credits to be insured for disability. If you are unsure regarding how many work quarters or credits you have, you should contact your local Social Security office or the toll free Social Security number (1-800-772-1213) for information. For the SSI disability program, of course, work credits and insured status are not an issue to qualify for disability since SSI offers disability benefits to those who are uninsured such as children and adults who either A) did not work long enough to be covered for SSD or B) were once covered for SSD, but whose coverage has lapsed due to gaps in employment work activity.
