Working while getting Disability - is it possible?

Yes, it is possible to work while getting disability. However, an individual who does this needs to be mindful of at least two things.

The first is that though while working and getting disability benefits from the social security administration is allowed, to continue to qualify for benefits an individual cannot earn more than substantial gainful activity. What is substantial gainful activity? It is a monetary amount for monthly earnings and individuals who earn at least this amount each month are not eligible for disability (to learn what the current SGA amount is, you should contact a local social security office as it changes annually).

The second issue, however, is that work activity can trigger a medical review of a claimant's case prior to when a review might ordinarily have occurred. Sometimes, this can mean being reviewed years earlier than might have been the case.

Individuals who feel, of course, that their condition is improving and would possibly like to return to work should not feel discourgaged from working. However, they should be mindful of the fact that work activity and earnings implicitly carry with them the possibility of affecting one's disability benefits.

Designing Accessible Communities

Designing AccessibleCommunities.org is a non-profit organization formed in 2006 that exists to provide education and information about building accessibility to disabled persons and professionals in the fields of code development, construction and design. The site states that their mission is to “promote, facilitate, and support the use of policies, accessible design, and manufactured products to ensure that all individuals, regardless of disability or age, are able to live within and participate fully in all aspects of their community and our society”.

On the site, you can find many sections of information and education about accessible designing, from ‘Accessible Products and New Technology’, ‘Codes and Regulations’ and ‘Policies’, to resources on disability information, assistive technology, built environment and design, as well as recreation and travel. The site also has a small section on media, which includes book reviews, articles, news, video, magazines and journals.

According to the website, the organization works with public and private groups to ensure that buildings and facilities are accessible through a variety of modes, such as technical assistance, education, professional consulting, and regulatory training and code development. The organization is an advocate of Universal Design, which is design that is simplified for use by as many people as possible with little or no extra cost, benefiting those of all abilities and ages.
