Designing Accessible Communities
![]() |
Designing AccessibleCommunities.org is a non-profit organization formed in 2006 that exists to provide education and information about building accessibility to disabled persons and professionals in the fields of code development, construction and design. The site states that their mission is to “promote, facilitate, and support the use of policies, accessible design, and manufactured products to ensure that all individuals, regardless of disability or age, are able to live within and participate fully in all aspects of their community and our society”.
On the site, you can find many sections of information and education about accessible designing, from ‘Accessible Products and New Technology’, ‘Codes and Regulations’ and ‘Policies’, to resources on disability information, assistive technology, built environment and design, as well as recreation and travel. The site also has a small section on media, which includes book reviews, articles, news, video, magazines and journals.
According to the website, the organization works with public and private groups to ensure that buildings and facilities are accessible through a variety of modes, such as technical assistance, education, professional consulting, and regulatory training and code development. The organization is an advocate of Universal Design, which is design that is simplified for use by as many people as possible with little or no extra cost, benefiting those of all abilities and ages.
