IS RENTAL COUNTED COUNTED AGAINST SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY?

Is Rental Income Counted Against My Social Security Disability Check?

Social Security Disability is based upon a residual functional capacity that is so restricted that it prevents substantial work activity. Social Security does not consider all income like the Internal Revenue Service; only wages are counted against an individual's continued entitlement to a disability benefit.

For example, if you have some rental property that you rent out that is not considered work activity for Social Security, however if you run a rental management service your income may be considered work activity thus the income may be counted against your disability entitlement.

It all depends on the context in which the rental income is received. If you have duplexes or houses that are an investment for you, they will not affect your Social Security Disability. But this is the case only for Social Security Disability not Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits.

Supplemental Security Income disability benefits are paid on the basis of financial need; consequently there are income and resource limits.

Most likely if you have a rental property that you do not live in, you would be over the resource limit for this disability program, and if you are receiving any kind of rental income it would be counted against your eligibility for SSI.
