DISABILITY BENEFITS FROM SSI OR SSDI

Do disability benefits come from SSI or SSDI?

"Do disability benefits come from SSI or SSDI? or are they two separate benefits?"

They are two separate programs administered in the same system. A person may receive SSD if they have enough work quarter credits to qualify. The insured status can be lost, however, if someone has not worked for a long time.

Generally, you keep your insured status for about five years from the last date you worked and were insured. Individuals who have lost their insured status, or never had it such as children, must file under SSI.

Sometimes, however, individuals are insured for SSD but have a low benefit amount they may potentially get. In those cases, there is often a concurrent claim for both SSD and SSI.
